The challenge.
Yard periods are busy times but also often one of the only periods where additional training is possible, especially on busy, dual-season yachts. An existing subscriber to our Virtual COLREGs Trainer, our client approached us with a long list of training needs and challenged us to deliver it with minimal impact to the onboard schedule and in a limited timeframe. They were also interested to get our feedback on their onboard operations.
The solution.
Working in the superyacht training space requires both rigorous planning and complete flexibility. Our approach was therefore to deliver the training modules in short, 20-45 minute sessions and to repeat each session to enable the crew to attend when they were available, thus minimising disruption to the overall operation.
In the space of a day and a half onboard, we delivered COLREGs, buoyage, crowd management, first-aid firefighting, basic risk management and EEBD training to the crew and repeated most of the sessions a couple of times.
Building on our passion for soft/informal auditing, we also took a close look at some of the yacht’s operations and gave the Chief Officer and Safety Officer some suggestions. We were able to give clear, actionable feedback on their risk management techniques, tender operations and planned maintenance system.
In their own words.
The training which Dragonfly conducted onboard was great and it was nice to be able to work with them to design exactly the program we wanted. The crew gained a lot from it and it was really helpful to pick through our procedures with a Master Mariner. We are looking forward to having the team onboard again whilst on passage to hone our navigation and bridge procedures.
