What’s the difference?
Auditing vs Assessment?
Auditing
Various regulations require the creation of systems to manage business processes, such as safety management in the maritime industry.
Auditing is simply the testing of effectiveness and implementation of that system by an independent party to ensure that it satisfies the requirements.
Audits are focused primarily on the system, rather than on people.
Assessment
Mostly carried out on a voluntary basis, assessment is focused on how people interact with a system.
It is primarily an observation of individual and team competency, with a strong focus on coaching and improvement.
They often take place over a longer period and are conducted during activities, such as navigation at sea, in order to gain a more realistic insight.
Can you see the wood for the trees?
Independent ISM Code Auditing
The International Safety Management (ISM) Code requires that vessels and companies undergo internal audits to assess how well their Safety Management System is complying with the requirements of the Code.
Although ISM audits may be done in-house, they are most effective when conducted by Auditors who are independent from the organisation and can bring external experience to bear.
We believe that ISM auditing, when conducted with a practical approach rather than a box-ticking mentality, is a key contributor to onboard safety. Our team of experienced ISM Code Lead Auditors are eager to help support your implementation of the ISM Code through DOC and SMC auditing.
What is really happening onboard?
Independent Navigation Assessment
Strong procedures are an important foundation for safety management but much of the risk arises through weak implementation onboard. An instructive example is Bridge Resource Management (BRM); despite widespread training and extensive procedures, it has often failed to soak into the culture onboard and poor practice is widespread.
Navigation Assessors seek to get to the heart of onboard implementation by spending longer onboard (days rather than hours), doing so while at sea and taking a less invasive approach, with more focus on observation, coaching and feedback.
Our team of qualified Navigation Assessors are on hand to provide an independent cross-check to ensure that the intent of your procedures is being implemented onboard and that best practice is being followed.
In their own words.
Having Dragonfly onboard for a few days while underway was a great learning experience for us. They slotted into the crew and gave us tonnes of useful tips to improve our operations on the Bridge and elsewhere. We also really appreciated their focus on teaching, especially with the junior crew.
We were very pleased with the DOC audit conducted by Dragonfly Maritime. It was thorough, professional and raised some valuable findings. In our view, bringing in an external Auditor is a great way of properly testing the system.
