The challenge.

The Marine Society has been helping seafarers to get ahead for over 260 years and access to education has always been at the forefront of that mission. Their award-winning Learn@Sea platform offers practical courses that can be consumed anywhere, anytime, with or without an internet connection, via their dedicated apps.
As they continue to expand the portfolio into new areas, Navigation@Sea was a natural next step. The challenge inherent in reaching seafarers everywhere is ensuring that the training package is small enough that it can be downloaded with a weak internet connection and used offline with none at all, yet still be engaging and interesting.

The solution.

Having won a competitive tendering process, we worked with the Marine Society’s digital content team to develop the course content, meeting the standards of MSQ 95 – Introduction to Navigation. Being an introductory course, we carefully crafted the course content to ensure that it gave the learners a solid foundation, without bombarding them with dense technical detail.

In order to make the content interesting, we wove it into a story. This placed our learner onboard a vessel about to undertake a voyage from Plymouth to Dover, UK, with the lessons culminating in their safe arrival at their destination, having learnt the skills they needed to along the way. The use of interesting, yet low-bandwidth appropriate, media was always going to be critical to this project, so our in-house creative team created around 70 entirely bespoke images, including a selection of avatars to lead the learner through the project.

In their own words.

  • After a competitive tendering process, we awarded the contract for the content creation of our Navigation@Sea course to Dragonfly Maritime.
We were impressed by their unique combination of training development and maritime expertise, together with having a creative design team in-house.
Dragonfly took a detailed approach to the project, keeping us well-informed throughout and delivering an excellent product to deadline and on budget. The course is now live on our award-winning Learn@Sea platform and we couldn’t be happier with it.
